Dilara found the geodes to be very interesting. I tried to record her talking about them, but the video didn't save. We found some "crystal growing kits" at the Dollar Tree and she has enjoyed working with them. Monoammonium phosphate, I think, is the "active ingredient. You are supposed to dissolve the crystals in water, set 2 small rocks in the solution and pour some of the dry crystals on top. It took several days, but they did okay. Not as impressive as the picture on the front of the package led us to believe, but she enjoyed it. We will continue to explore crystals as time permits. http://www.ehow.com/how_7311467_explain-crystals-first-graders.html 7/12/2014 Dilara has not been home much this week...she has been at Lipscomb Girls' Soccer Camp. Today she examined the crystal "growing" experiment, and all the water has evaporated. I'll take pictures when I get some batteries for the camera. Also, a video of her talking about it. We got a couple of kit, with different colors. This one was red. She wants to do the green one next, and we can make some comparisons. I should have taken pictures and notes as we went along.. Oh, well. Maybe with the next batch. She did notice that the crystals didn't accumulate much on the bottom of the rocks. Wonder why? Something to talk about. Started to watch a cool documentary, but she was too tired. Looks like it will be a good thing for the whole family to watch! http://www.yale.edu/ynhti/curriculum/units/1989/6/89.06.04.x.html#d a lesson for fifth to eighth grade
